Will Rogers Students Journey to the Ice Age as La Brea Tar Pits Mobile Museum Rolls onto Campus

Some of Will Rogers Elementary School’s youngest learners were recently transported back in time to the Ice Age when giant sloths, saber-toothed cats and mammoths roamed the region, bringing the wonders of prehistoric Los Angeles to tiny paleontologists-in-the-making.

As part of an on-site field trip to the La Brea Tar Pits Mobile Museum on January 24, eager students in Transitional Kindergarten, Kinder, first- and second-grades were wide-eyed as they learned, explored and played inside the museum-on-wheels, a large colorful trailer parked on the school’s blacktop.

TK-2 classes visited the immersive museum throughout the day. Once inside the prehistoric playground, students engaged in anatomical puzzles and a simulated fossil dig, unearthing miniature replicas of ancient bones. Knowledgeable guides also sparked students’ curiosity about the rich history hidden beneath the region’s surface.

The Mobile Museum is designed to bring portions of the entire La Brea Tar Pits experience to local schools and remove barriers from communities in need. Lynwood Unified is committed to providing students with hands-on and interactive learning experiences that are accessible and enhance their educational journeys, fill them with knowledge at an early age and spark interest in science, history and more as they carve an exciting path toward their futures.
